The auto manufacturer owed by Elon Musk has been highly sought after over the years for their various models of Tesla. The vehicles have continuously received praise on the market for their unique design due to the fact that they are entirely electric. One of the most commonly known unique aspects of the design is the “frunk,” otherwise known as the front trunk. This is exactly as it sounds, a trunk in the front of the vehicle due to the fact that the vehicle has no internal combustion engine. However, due to an issue in recent models, 1.8 million Teslas have been recalled, with the frunk at the forefront of the problems.
The recall affects models from 2020 to 2024.
Specifically, Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles from 2021 to 2024 are on the recall list. Model Y vehicles from 2020 to 2024 are also included on the list. The issue at hand in these vehicles is that the frunk is ultimately unlatched and will fully open while the vehicle is in motion. This obviously leads to danger as the driver’s view becomes obstructed and the driver is at higher risk of getting into an accident. Thus far, the company has reported no knowledge of any accidents, injuries, or death that are in relation to this issue.
The recall was announced this morning.
So far, Tesla has not released a statement beyond the recall notice. News outlets have reported that they are seemingly refusing to comment on the issue. It is known at this time that Tesla began investigating the issue on some of the vehicles as early as mid to late March. Just a month later, they identified the issue was more widespread than they thought. The investigation began due to the company receiving many customer complaints on the issue of the Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
Tesla reportedly identified the issue as a latch switch deformation.
The issue was first identified in vehicles in China but has now also been seen in models throughout Europe and North America. They have found the issue most prevalent in China, but they are still unsure as to why the issue is present everywhere but in varying rates. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla released a free software update.
