The Bay Area’s own, Vice President Kamala Harris, has officially launched her presidential campaign for the Democratic ticket, after President Joe Biden announces he is dropping out of the race. Thus far on the campaign trail, President Joe Biden has been remaining strong in his campaign, repeatedly expressing his plans to remain in the race and win reelection. This has been happening as many have called for him to drop from the race out of fear of his age, lack of ability to serve, and how both of those factors put him at risk of losing to President Trump. On Sunday, he changed the course of the election when he announced that he is dropping from the race and that he endorses his VP, Kamala Harris. Shortly after his announcement, Harris formally announced the start of her campaign.
Harris grew up in the Bay Area, a fact that many are proud to share today.
Specifically, she was born in Oakland, California and raised mostly in Berkeley. She was raised along with her sister by a single mother. Her mother was a doctor and activist, and her father was a professor, who was still an active part of Kamala’s childhood. Many in the Bay Area are familiar with her from her life there, before she got into politics. Now, around the cities in the region, you can find murals of her and other dedications to her, showing the people’s pride in her. This pride has now only grown tenfold with her formal presidential campaign.
This shift in the party campaigning is quite historic.
Due to his incumbency, unless he stepped down, President Biden was almost assuredly the Democratic nomination for the upcoming election. His announcement of dropping out of the race coming just four months before the election is the latest a party’s likely nominee has ever dropped out. The latest prior to this was when President Johnson dropped out of his reelection campaign in March of the 1968 election year. His announcement came after one state held its primary. Biden already received millions of votes after the primaries have completed in every state. Nonetheless, he was not considered the formal nominee for the party, as the Democratic National Convention has not yet been held. Technically, Harris is not the formal nominee either.
The Democratic Party will not have the formal nominee named until the week of August 19th, when the convention is scheduled to begin.
