Trade in unwanted firearms in San Jose this Saturday for cash.

Lately, gun violence has been a topic of discussion throughout the United States. Therefore, many cities and states are attempting to reduce gun violence in a number of ways. San Jose county and state leaders, along with police, came up with a program to do this. The announcement released Thursday stated that this would be a gun buyback program.

This program will be held on Saturday at the department’s South San Jose facility. From 9am to 1pm, residents of San Jose can turn in any of their unwanted guns in exchange for cash. This will occur at the substation: 6087 Great Oaks Parkway.

The incentive is $100 for residents turning in handguns, shotguns, and rifles. For assault weapons, the incentive is $200. Additionally, police stated that those who wish to participate in the gun buyback program must transport their weapons, unloaded, in the trunk of a vehicle. They are not taking ammunition as part of the program.

After collection, officials check all firearms for lost or stolen status. If found, officials will return them to their rightful, legal owners. Then, any other weapons turned in are set for destruction.

Preventing gun violence is becoming a top priority, especially after the mass shooting in Thousand Oaks this November. As a result, thirteen people were killed in that shooting – including a police officer and the shooter. Due to this, the hope for this San Jose program is to get more guns off the streets.
